The experienced energy industry leader will take charge of BP’s Downstream division in January 2027, bringing more than 25 years of experience across chemicals, refining and global operations.

British energy company BP PLC has appointed Emma Lewis, a senior executive from Shell PLC, as its new Executive Vice President of Downstream. Lewis will officially join BP on 4 January 2027 and become a member of the company’s leadership team.

Until her appointment takes effect, Richard Harding, who has served as interim head of the Downstream business since July, will continue in the position.

Lewis most recently served as Executive Vice President of Chemicals at Shell, where she was responsible for overseeing the company’s global chemicals operations. Her responsibilities included manufacturing, commercial activities, supply chain operations and logistics as well as managing joint ventures.

With more than 25 years of experience in the energy and chemicals industries, Lewis has held several senior operational and commercial positions at Shell and ExxonMobil across Europe, Asia and North America.

She joined Shell in 2012 after spending approximately 13 years at ExxonMobil. During her time there, she gained experience in manufacturing operations, chemicals supply and logistics and product management.

In her new role, Lewis will oversee BP’s Downstream division, which includes refining, terminals and pipelines, mobility and convenience, aviation and bioenergy operations. The division plays an important role in connecting the company’s fuel production, transportation and customer-facing businesses.

BP Chief Executive Meg O’Neill welcomed the appointment, highlighting Lewis’s strong operational and commercial background. She also emphasised the importance of strengthening business performance and creating long-term value for shareholders.

The appointment marks an important leadership development for BP as the company continues to strengthen its operations and improve performance across its global energy business.
